Excellent post. Very informative.

I sure hope those certs come down in price before we have to get one.

I think this is a ridiculous and unnecessary expense. I can see providing stronger security. I can see making verification of your credentials a little more strict. But, jumping up the price from ~$100/year to at least $900 seems very excessive. So basically, I am paying for a colored address bar, more public info about my business, 256bit encryption, and ... um, ... and, ... a, then there is always, um...

To me, this sounds like a money grab from the cert issuers. There is no way that these cert companies have incurred that much more expense to justify passing it on to us.

The worst thing about it is that eventually, we will have to get one just so that people will buy from us.

I think they are a waste of money at this point. 256-bit encryption reminds me of their scene in Spinal Tap where the guitarist is bragging about his amp having a volume dial that goes up to 11 instead of 10. http://en.wikipedia....ki/Up_to_eleven

Heck, it's not at all easy to crack 128-bit encryption and unless your trafficking in state secrets, you won't need a 256-bit cert.

But your right about the address bar. You're paying 10 times the price of a 128-bit ssl just to turn the address bar green.

The other area merchants will get squeezed from is IE's anti-phishing tool. Having a EV cert makes certain that Microsoft trusts your site not be a phishing scheme.

Anti-phishing and 256 encryption....
Isn't it odd that they are so late with addressing the phishing and so early with addressing the encryption? Truly, if a person doesn't know how to handle phishing at this point, they will probably be freaked out by a flashing browser bar. If they really wanted to assist these types of customers they'd make the non-accredited sites flash red - of course, they couldn't make a buck off those types of "vendors".
